A friend of mine tells me that she is being careful not to smash anything. I ask her if she is worried about something in particular and she tells me that the time for particulars has passed; she is finding it hard to distinguish one thing from another, she says, as if the original edges have been damaged and repaired and the repairs expertly concealed. She has come to mistrust her own hands and their capacity for harm.
